Alexander Wang – One of New York’s most anticipated shows and with reason as every season is a surprise. From identifying the newest members of the #WangSquad to seeing performances from nostalgic 90s rappers, Wang knows how to turn fashion into a lifestyle. This season he mixed things up a little in terms of design, revamping classics with trompe-l’oeil effects. Our favorite was Kendall Jenner in a deconstructed suit jacket dress with sleeves as a self-tie belt. And of course, the adorning “Wangover” crown.
Sies Marjan – Every editor’s up-and-coming favorite designer at the moment, Sander Lak brought back soft, dreamy pastels, made them cool again, and has influenced many of this season’s color palettes. Using subtle color blocking and contrasting (even associating unlikely colors such as pink and blue combos), Lak’s winning look was his whimsical sugary pink silk set layered with a pastel lilac teddy coat. Talk about a street style photographer’s dream!
Victoria Beckham – The simple elegance of Beckham’s collection this season had to be applauded. “Soft, strong, honest, easy – this collection reflects the many powers of femininity,” the designer wrote in her show notes. “Delicacy can be strong.” This was perfectly executed in her fire engine red look mid-show that intertwined a plunging shirt with voluminous sleeves with a flowy a-line skirt which seamlessly blended into each other, almost transforming into a dress.
Looks from JEREMY SCOTT’s, MATTHEW ADAMS DOLAN’s and VJONATHAN SIMKHAI’s Spring/Summer 2018 ready-to-wear shows in New York. Photo by Gio Staiano for NOWFASHION.
Jeremy Scott – For his 20th anniversary collection, Scott kept one eye on the past to reimagine the future by handpicking some of his signature elements (think cartoon drawings and highlighter neon color ways) to design his S/S18 looks. The standout was Joan Smalls in a super sheer dress that was embellished with oversized jewels.
Matthew Adams Dolan – For S/S18, Dolan felt it was time to meditate on “what it has meant to be American in the past and what it will mean to be American in the future.” His take on that meant venturing into America’s past, touching upon icons such as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. as well as dynasty families like the Lauders and the Laurens. These were all offset with references to American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman and the characters of Cruel Intentions which resulted in a mix of preppy signifiers that felt modern and thoughtful.
Jonathan Simkhai – Turning to Ward Roberts for inspiration this season, Simkhai referenced the photographer’s court series picking out the pastel hues and dream-like architectural compositions. The designer aimed to balance American activewear with overtly feminine fabrics and silhouettes, and the result was a dream!
