Diane von Furstenberg Ready To Wear Fall Winter 2014 New York

The title of the fall/winter 2014 Diane von Furstenberg show said it all: Bohemian Wrapsody. In this, the 40th anniversary of von Furstenberg’s invention of the wrap dress, the designer paid homage to the garment on which she built her fashion empire.

And so it was that a medley of wrap dresses, wrap sweaters, wrap tunics and maybe even a wrap skirt walked down the designer’s graphic black and white patterned runway. It was clear that all the research and work that went into the designer’s exhibit “DVF 40 – Journey of a Dress,” which opened last month at the Wilshire May Company Building in Los Angeles, got von Furstenberg’s creative juices flowing. And they ran all the way back to the decade that started it all the 1970s.

It was all out there on the catwalk. Bold prints? Check- we’ve got love knots, gold stars, crescent moons and bright blooms. Vibrant hues? Check- how do cobalt, purple, fuchsia, orange and red grab you?  Retro yet relevant proportions? Check- why not take a peasant blouse, some fluid silk jersey pants or a plunging neckline dress out for a spin?

And while gold is traditionally reserved for a 50th anniversary, the high energy designer had no intention of waiting another decade to give her collection a gilded send off. The finale saw every smiling model wearing a solid gold ensemble for their last turn on the runway. And as the singer St. Vincent serenaded the audience with new songs of her soon to drop self- titled album, golden confetti exploded from the rafters to shimmer down onto the heads of the audience.

If nothing else, von Furstenberg certainly knows how to go for a big finish in style.
